Glossier's Wowder Review

If you know me, then you know that I LOVE the beauty brand Glossier. Their products are everything I want from a makeup company. A hyper focus on good skin care, minimalist effort with application, and a finish that doesn't leave your looking like you are caked up in makeup. Their brand aesthetic speaks to my millennial soul with their overuse of millennial pink! I'm alllll about it. So when they dropped the announcement of their first ever powder release like they were Beyonce' announcing a pregnancy, I. WAS. STOKED.

When it comes to facial makeup, I usually steer clear of liquid foundation. There's nothing wrong with liquid at all. But for my skin type I like a powder. To be more specific, I like to conceal (insert Glossier Stretch Concealer here) and then set with powder. Doing it this way lets me cover up blemishes and acne scars while keeping the integrity of my skin. In the end, I still want my skin to look like skin!

Wowder runs $22 on the Glossier website or $35 if you buy the Wowder Duo, which comes with a brush. I went ahead and got the duo because I am a sucker for a set. It comes in three shades: Light/Medium, Dark/Deep, and Rich. I bought Light/Medium. The website claims that it is refining, mattifying, makeup setting, hypo-allergenic, derm tested, talc free, paraben free, fragrance free, and cruelty free. All of which are huge musts for me! I have acneic/sensitive skin, so if a product isn't fragrance free I usually walk away. But Wowder, on paper, seems to be made for me.

But does it work? I am sure you are dying to know how I liked it. I've only been using it about a few days but so far its been good. The way it works is you press the brush into the mesh, that deposits a controlled amount of powder onto your brush. You can tap off excess if you want, but I just go ahead and press it onto my face. I will press the product onto my skin and then swipe the brush to finish off. It gives the most natural matte finish I've ever seen in a powder. As a girl with combo/oily skin, I tend to lean toward matte powders for their oil absorbing. But 9 times out of 10 a powder that claims to be mattifying is really code for chalky and cakey. Wowder is neither of those things. It really does refine my skin. It blurs pores and adds a veil of coverage to imperfections. It doesn't leave my skin looking like I have a layer of powder on top. It just blends so easily into my skin and looks completely natural. The brush is the perfect compliment to the powder. It allows you to control your application really well. And the little pouch is too dang cute.

I know some people have claimed that it keeps them shine free all day long. But really oily girls will know that that is pretty impossible. While it doesn't last all day, it does re-apply really well! A quick swipe of Wowder completely refreshes your look without looking like you've just plopped more makeup on top of your hours old makeup. All in all, its a great setting powder for girls who love natural looks.

While I love the performance of this product, I have to complain about some superficial aspects of it. Like I said at the beginning of this post, their brand aesthetic speaks to my soul. The clean bright whites and the perfect shade of pink. It plays to my love for minimalism while also being punky and fun. But I cannot stand the little Wowder logo on the top of the container. To be honest, its such a cheesy and juvenile graphic. No other product in their line has their own logo branding. The closest thing that comes to it is their masks. But everything else stays in line with the minimalist look complimented with the pack of stickers they give you with your order that you can use to custom decorate your own products! I know thats such a weird thing to be annoyed by. But when you're someone who loves good branding, little things like inconsistency can be maddening. Part of me hopes that they'll change their mind on the packaging and stick to something simpler.

Moral of the story, if you're thinking about grabbing Wowder, DO IT. All my fellow oily girls will love it. If you're a stickler for packaging like me, prepare to be slightly ticked off by that silly little logo, haha.
