My New Obsession: Matcha Lattes

A year ago I quit coffee cold turkey. A therapist told me earlier in the year that coffee was feeding my anxiety. I was hesitant about the information she had given me because after all, coffee was just a drink! How could my morning cup of liquid gold be making me feel so terrible?? I didn't want to believe her.

So I continued to drink coffee every single morning. I continued to feel anxious and awful through my mornings and early afternoons and then completely crash by the time 2pm rolled around. This was my daily routine for a really long time. Soon enough I was constantly exhausted and emotionally drained and I had reached the end of my rope. I decided to take the therapists advice and ditch the coffee. Luckily for me I didn't go through any sort of caffeine withdrawals. I did however feel SO. MUCH. BETTER. I still struggled with anxiety but it definitely wasn't something I was feeling every day. I felt like I could actually accomplish things during the day without freezing up or shutting down. And most exciting of all, there was no 2pm crash. Turns out, that lady was right.

Now, I mentioned earlier that I didn't suffer from any withdrawal symptoms. But I did miss my morning routine. I missed the smell, the french press, and sitting down and just taking in the morning with a warm cup in my hand. I've always loved tea but I was craving something rich and creamy like coffee. Enter the Matcha Latte!!

You've probably already seen the milky looking green drink all over your insta stories. Its the hottest new drink that has existed for hundreds of years but made trendy by us millennials. You're welcome. After doing some research I found that matcha is a great source of antioxidants, amazing for heart health, gives a cleaner and less jittery boost of energy, promotes focus, and can even kick start a slow metabolism! As a skeptic I felt like it was too good to be true.  But growing up in Japan, I'd had ceremonial green tea many, many times. The scent and taste was a memory from childhood. Just for that, I was excited to try it as a coffee replacement.

I had already seen a few of my favorite Instagrammers featuring their versions on their grams so I kind of had an idea of how I wanted to go about making my own. I took to Amazon and ordered all of my provisions on prime! I like to keep it fairly simple while also making sure my morning cup was full of good things for my body. So enough babble, here is what I use to make my power green matcha latte and all of the steps I take to make it creamy and frothy! For those of you who want to give it a go, I've linked all of the ingredients at the end of the post. Enjoy!

1. Matcha Love Culinary Matcha! Though it comes in a tiny little canister, it only takes 1 teaspoon of matcha powder to make a latte! I add my teaspoon of matcha to my mug while I have a kettle of water going. Once the water has heated I add a few table spoons (I just eye ball it, please don't try and pour piping hot water into a tiny ass tablespoon) into the mug. This allows me to dissolve the matcha well. No green floaties for me! I use a little hand frother to mix the water and matcha mix. You can pick those up pretty much anywhere. I just ordered mine on amazon for like $6.

2. When the little mix is nice and frothy I add a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. This is a completely dissolvable, tasteless powder. We naturally make collagen in our bodies, but as we get older the amount we make drastically decreases. Its always a good idea to add it back into your system because collagen has tons of health benefits. It helps restore moisture into our skin which fight signs of aging. It promotes bone, tendon, and joint health as well as improve gut health and digestion. All of which are really important to me. So I put a nice big scoop of that miracle powder as well as pour more hot water into my mug. At this point my my cup has about a cup of very green liquid in it.

3. At this point I use the same teaspoon I used to measure out my matcha powder to add some Philosophie Green Bee Superfood Honey! This stuff is so ace! I mean I love honey to begin with. But when you add a bunch of really good superfoods to your honey, that's just GENIUS! Its full of spirulina, maca, mesquite, hemp powder, chia, and bit of vanilla. While I feel like the other ingredients are pretty brand interchangeable, Philosophie's Green Bee is a pantry staple!

4. Once all of the good goods are mixed in together, I add about 2 cups of heated almond milk! You could use any type of milk that you like, but I don't drink cows milk. So almond it is for me! I love the flavor almond milk adds to the latte. I'm sure if you like coconut, coconut milk would be lovely! Some days if I am feeling an iced latte, I'll pop the green mix into the fridge for 10 minutes and then pour it over iced almond milk! It such a good afternoon pick me up on hot days.

5. Finally, give it one last quick pulse from the frother and you're done! Drink up buttercup!

I hope this was a helpful post for those of you looking for a coffee alternative. If you end up giving a matcha latte a go, please let me know! If you already drink matcha lattes, what are your favorite things to add?

  1. This sounds so good. I've been wanting to try match for sometime, especially after seeing your IG story of it haha. I just can't remember if I enjoy the taste of it. Hot drinks is so hard for me to drink too, I get iced everything.
